Henrietta Downing 1876-1955

Dan Mahoney also went to Chicago, where he married Henrietta Downing on April 7, 1898. Their first child, Teresa was born in Chicago. He served in the Spanish American War during the early years of his marriage. We were told that his wife lived at the farm in Beaver Township for some time during the early part of their marriage, but the dates aren't clear. Their second child, Joe, was born in Deadwood, SD., but Henrietta was back in Chicago in 1901 when Loretta was born.

As a result of Dan's service in the Spanish American War, he was granted a homestead in Nebraska. It was outside of the town of Valentine. Dan was a Captain in the Home Guard, Nebraska National Guard, Johnstown Unit. He died in Valentine, Nebraska, on Nov. 10, 1922.

After Dan's death, his wife remained in Valentine until her death on Apr. 27, 1955. Steve, one of Dan and Henrietta's children, said that his mother made several trips to California where Steve lived, but always preferred to return to Nebraska.
